Under the direction of Dr. A.M. Gondane, Deputy Consul General, Consulate General of India, the fellowships honor the life and scholarship of Columbia University Professor Jagdish Bhagwati. Bhagwati, one of the world's best-known economists, is also a Senior Fellow in International Economics at the Council on Foreign Relations and is widely regarded as the intellectual father of the Indian economic reforms that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh led, which have transformed India into a rapidly growing force on the world stage. Award preference is given to students who are residents of India and who are interested in performing work and research in the fields of international trade, trade law, public interest law and human rights.
